        Akron After School

Akron After School offers students in grades K-6 Reading/Math Intervention, Homework Club, and Youth Development (fun) classes.

Akron After School focuses on increasing assessment scores while recognizing a student’s social variables.  Academic achievement is an important focus for our students, but it isn’t our only goal. We need to prepare students to be healthy citizens, with diverse knowledge in areas varying from culture to the arts.  By incorporating these dimensions we can help students to develop physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively.

Daily Schedule

2:30-3:00  Snack

3:00-4:00  Intervention

4:00-5:15  Youth Development

Guided Reading

North High School Early Education students volunteer in the kindergarten.

Benchmark Reading and Math

Students attend reading intervention 2 days a week and math intervention the other 2 days.   The Benchmark curriculum that is provided is the same curriculum that is used during the day. This gives the students more time to work on skills they are learning already.

Students are reading in guided reading groups.  They are writing and also working on word work. Students rotate through centers that keep them actively engaged in the learning process.

Students have been working on real-world math tasks using their critical thinking and problem solving skills. Ask your students about their math experience in Akron After School! What's been their favorite problem so far? Combinations on a Coke Freestyle? Maybe the Fidget Spinners

Learning to Crochet

Students enjoy painting ceramics such as plates, bowls and decorative pieces that they can take home.

Youth Development

Akron After School offers many different Youth Development classes such as Mad Science, Ceramics, Dance, Girl Scouts, and the all time favorite Recreation class.  Each buildings teachers also teach Youth Development classes such as Computer Club, Games, Crafts, Cooking, Basketball, and many more! What a great way to get to know your teacher in a different setting. Students are given the opportunity to choose and attend their favorite classes.

Students in first through sixth grade have been participating in our Recreation Class each day during Youth Development time. During this time, students learn different physical activities and games each day that keeps them engaged and active! Along with physical activity, students sample nutritional snacks and learn how to eat healthy for their bodies!
